Electrical Codes
The State of Wyoming has adopted the 2008 National Electrical Code without amendments effective July 1, 2008.

Licensing requirements:
“Chief Electrical Inspector” means the administrator of the electrical safety division, who is a Wyoming master electrician, certified as an electrical inspector by the International Association of Electrical Inspectors or the International Conference of Building Officials.

Electrical inspectors must be licensed electricians, and it is preferred that they become certified through a program such as the IAEI.

Electrical Contractor
"Electrical Contractor" means a person licensed by the Department to contract with another to plan, lay out and supervise the installation of electric equipment. "Electrical Contractor" excludes a person who only plans or designs electrical installations.
   
Requirements:

In the case of contractors, the master acknowledgment of responsibility form shall be completed and the signature of the full time actively employed master electrician of record shall be notarized and returned with the application and the appropriate fee during the ninety (90) days preceding expiration.

All work done by an electrical contractor concerning the planning, laying out, supervision, and installing, or the making of additions, alterations, and repairs in the installation or wiring of apparatus and equipment for electric light, heat, and power shall be under the direction and supervision of a licensed journeyman electrician or a licensed master electrician.

Master Electrician
"Master Electrician" means a person licensed by the Department who has eight (8) years experience in the electrical wiring industry and technical knowledge to plan, lay out and supervise the installation of electric equipment in accordance with the National Electrical Code and city, county and state ordinances and regulations.
   
Requirements:

8 years, (16,000 hours) of work experience in the electrical wiring industry. This work history must include evidence of experience in planning, laying out, and NEC and shall have been under the direct supervision of a qualifying electrician for a licensed electrical contractor. Electrical work experience is to consist of electrical installation in residential, commercial, and industrial categories. No more than 75% of the 8 years (16,000 hours) may be in any one category. Up to 2 years (4,000 hours) credit may be given for study of electrically related courses taken through an accredited school. For electrical experience gained in the military to be considered, you must include a copy of your DD-214 form with this application.

Schooling experience shall be documented by official transcripts, which indicate the number of credit hours or the actual number of classroom hours of the electrically related courses. Work experience shall be documented by notarized letters or the enclosed employment verification form from employers (past and present), notarized letters from local unions, or official letters from other licensing boards detailing the duration (actual number of hours) and character of the work. A copy of a current electrical license from another state licensing board, which has work history requirements equal to or more stringent than the 8 year (16,000 hour) requirement of the State of Wyoming, may be acceptable as proof of work history. Effective March 1, 1994, an applicant for a journeyman electrician or master electrician license must also present evidence of 144 hours per year, or 576 hours over a four year apprenticeship, of successfully completed electrically related classroom instruction obtained through approved electrical apprenticeship training programs.

CE Requirement: The license holder must obtain at least 16 hours of approved update education prior to renewing the license. To be acceptable, all courses must have prior Electrical board approval. At least 8 of these 16 hours must be from a course that specifically covers the National Electrical Code. The 16 hours must be obtained between the date of issuance and the date of expiration of the license.
   
Renewal: The master electrician’s license is valid for 3 years, renewing on July 1st of every 3rd year. Renewal fee: $100
 
Journeyman Electrician
"Journeyman Electrician" means a person licensed by the Department who has four (4) years experience in the electrical wiring industry and technical knowledge to install and supervise the installation of electrical equipment for any purpose in accordance with the National Electrical Code and city, county and state ordinances and regulations.
   
Requirements:

Must pass examination

For an applicant to take the Wyoming Journeyman electrician’s exam, the applicant must present evidence of 4 years, (8,000 hours) of work experience in the electrical wiring industry. This work history must include evidence of experience in planning, laying out, and NEC and shall have been under the direct supervision of a qualifying electrician for a licensed electrical contractor. Electrical work experience is to consist of electrical installation in residential, commercial, and industrial categories. No more than 75% of the 4 years (8,000 hours) may be in any one category. Apprentice Electrician

"Apprentice Electrician" means a person who has insufficient qualifications to be a journeyman electrician and is hired by a licensed electrical contractor to assist a licensed journeyman or master electrician. From and after March 1, 1994, an apprentice electrician must be registered with the Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety, and must be enrolled in a bona fide program of training approved by the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training, United States Department of Labor, or present evidence directly to the Board that he is enrolled in an apprentice training program which provides training equivalent to a program approved by the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training, United States Department of Labor.

An apprentice electrician shall be required to work four (4) years, a minimum of 8000 hours under the direct supervision of a licensed journeyman or master electrician.

   
Requirements:

A person wishing to become an apprentice electrician must be employed in the electrical trade and shall be registered and licensed with the Department of Fire Prevention & Electrical Safety within ten (10) days from date of employment.

Federal Law requires minimum eligible starting age to be not less than 16 years.

The apprentice must complete at least 2,000 hours of on the job training and successfully complete 144 hours of related training before the apprentice can be advanced to the next level in their apprenticeship.

Renewal: Each apprentice shall re-register prior to September 1 of each year, furnishing proof of required instruction and work experience performed during the previous years of employment with notarized letters or the enclosed employment verification form from applicant’s current employer and a certificate of achievement from the related training program attended by the apprentice; Renewal fee: $20
 
Low-Voltage/Limited Contractor License
"Low Voltage Electrical Contractor" means a person licensed by the Department to contract with another to plan, lay out and supervise the installation of electrical equipment associated with the type of limited electrical contractor license held. "Low Voltage Electrical Contractor" excludes a person who only plans or designs electrical installations.
   
Requirements:

In the case of low voltage and limited electrical contractors, the technician acknowledgment of responsibility form shall be completed and the signature of the full time actively employed technician of record shall be notarized and returned with the application and the appropriate fee during the ninety (90) days preceding expiration.

All work done by a low voltage or limited electrical contractor concerning the planning, laying out, supervision, and installing or the making of additions, alterations, and repairs in the installation or wiring of apparatus and equipment associated with the category of low voltage or limited electrical contractor's license held, shall be under the direction and supervision of a licensed low voltage or limited technician of the proper category. Any low voltage or limited electrical contractor who fails to have all low voltage or limited electrical work properly supervised by a licensed low voltage or limited technician may have his low voltage or limited electrical contractor's license suspended or revoked by the Board.

It shall be permissible for a low voltage or limited electrical contractor to employ licensed journeyman or licensed master electricians. The scope of work for journeyman or master electricians working for low voltage or limited electrical contractors shall be limited by the category of low voltage or limited electrical contractor's license held by the contractor.

Limited Technician License
"Limited Technician" means a person licensed by the Department who has two (2) years experience in the portion of the electrical wiring industry covered by his limited license and technical knowledge to install and supervise the installation of electrical equipment associated with the type of
limited electrical license held in accordance with the National Electrical Code and city, county and state ordinances and regulations.
   
Requirements:

2 years (4,000 hours) experience in the portion of the electrical wiring industry covered by his limited license and technical knowledge to install and supervise the installation of electrical equipment associated with the type of limited electrical license held in accordance with the National Electrical Code and city, county and state ordinances and regulations.

Any technician electrician performing electrical work in the State of Wyoming shall be employed at all times by a limited/low voltage electrical contractor who carries a current Wyoming limited/ low voltage electrical contractor’s license.

Examination fee: $85

Low-Voltage Technician License
"Low Voltage Technician" means a person licensed by the Department who has two (2) years experience in the portion of the electrical wiring industry covered by his low voltage license and technical knowledge to install and supervise the installation of electrical equipment associated with the type of low voltage electrical license held in accordance with the National Electrical Code and city, county and state ordinances and regulations.
   
Requirements:

2 years (4,000 hours) experience in the portion of the electrical wiring industry covered by his/her low voltage license and technical knowledge to install and supervise the installation of electrical equipment associated with the type of low voltage electrical license held in accordance with the National Electrical Code and city, county and state ordinances and regulations.

Any technician electrician performing electrical work in the State of Wyoming shall be employed at all times by a limited/low voltage electrical contractor who carries a current Wyoming limited/ low voltage electrical contractor’s license.

If you have had a master license from Utah or South Dakota, for at least a year and pass an exam with a score of 75% or better, Wyoming may recognize your license
