Licensing requirements:

Electrical Contractor
Allows local municipalities to accept electrical permit applications from owner of the contracting business, a partner in the contracting business applying on behalf of the partnership, or the chairman of the board or chief executive officer applying on behalf of the contracting business.  
   
Requirements:

The applicant shall be: the owner of the business, a partner applying on behalf of the business, or the chairman of the board or chief excecutive officer applying on behalf of the corporation.

The business owner must be a state-level master electrician or employ one.

   
Fees:

Application fee: $35

Certification or Registration fee: $200

     
Renewal: Up to 4 years. Expires on June 30 during the fourth year after issuance
 
Electrical Contractor - Restricted
Allows local municipalities to accept electrical permit applications from a person to perform electrical construction work in one or more municipalities where the person held municipal electrical licenses or certifications as of the date the municipalities required state certification.
   
Requirements:

The applicant shall hold or have held a license or certification to do electrical construction work issued by one or more municipalities as of the date that municipality required state certification under s 101.87(3), Wis. Stats.

   
Fees:

Application fee: $35

Certification or Registration fee: $200

     
Renewal: Up to 4 years. Expires on June 30 during the fourth year after issuance
 
Electrical Inspector, Commercial
Allows a person to conduct the inspection of electrical installations in public buildings and places of employment for the purpose of administering and enforcing ch. Comm 16  
   
Requirements:

Pass an exam.  As a prerequisite to taking the Department of Commerce exam, the applicant shall provide proof of

(a) at least 1,000 hours per year for at least 6 years of experience in electrical work; can substitute 3 years full-time schooling for experience, or

(b) at least 1,000 hours per year for at least 3 years of experience in electrical work and a degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university, or

(c) at least 1,000 hours per year for at least 3 years of experience in electrical work and is a professional engineer, architect, or designer of electrical systems.

If you are a master electrician, or hold electrical inspector or commercial electrical inspector certification issued by the International Code Council, or hold a Certified Electrical Inspector-Master certification issued under the International Association of Electrical Inspectors/National Fire Protection Association, you can get the Commercial Electrical Inspector license without taking an exam.

CE Requirements: 24 Hours of continuing education.
   
Renewal: Up to 4 years. Expires on June 30 during the fourth year after issuance.
 
Electrical Inspector, Uniform Dwelling Code (UDC) One- and Two-Family Home
Allows a person to inspect one- and two-family dwellings for the purpose of administering and enforcing chs. Comm 16 and 24  
   
Requirements:

No experience or training is necessary to take the exam.

Can get the license by showing proof of being a journeyman electrician or a Certified Electrical Inspector-Residential issued under the International Association of Electrical Inspectors/National Fire Protection Association without taking the exam.

Certification or Registration fee: $30

Exam fee: $20

     
CE Requirements: 24 Hours of continuing education.
   
Renewal: Up to 4 years. Expires on June 30 during the fourth year after issuance.
 
Electrician, Beginning
Certification granted to an electrician with some experience installing and repairing electrical wiring to work under direct supervision of a master or journeyman electrician. Local municipalities decide whether certification is required

Renewal: Up to 4 years. Expires on June 30 during the fourth year after issuance.
 
Electrician, Journeyman
Allows an electrician who will be working under a master electrician to obtain a license at any municipality without local examination. Local municipalities decide whether certification is required.  
   
Requirements:

As a prerequisite to taking the Department of Commerce exam, the applicant shall provide proof of at least 1,000 hours per year for at least 5 years of experience in electrical construction work. No more than 2,000 hours and 2 years experience may be credited from approved course work.

You may also obtain license without an exam by showing proof of having completed the electrical construction apprenticeship.

Exam fee: $30

     
Renewal: Up to 4 years. Expires on June 30 during the fourth year after issuance.
 
Electrician, Master
Allows an electrician to obtain a license at any municipality without local examination. Local municipalities decide whether certification is required
   
Requirements:

As a prerequisite to taking the Department of Commerce exam, the applicant shall provide proof of at least 1,000 hours per year for at least 7 years of experience in electrical construction work. No more than 3,000 hours and 3 years experience may be credited from approved course work.

Certification or Registration fee: $200

Exam fee: $30

     
CE Requirements: 24 Hours of continuing education.
   
Renewal: Up to 4 years. Expires on June 30 during the fourth year after issuance.
