Electrical Codes
The legislative bill adopting the 2005 edition of the National Electrical Code was signed by the Governor March 25th, 2005. The new code will go into effect April 25th. Permits issued under the 2002 NEC will be inspected per the requirements of that code; permits issued after April 25th will be subject to the requirements of the 2005 edition.


Licensing: Electrical Inspectors/Services & Licensing: Contractors
All electrical installations require inspection except those in single-family dwellings

Municipalities and other political subdivisions have the option of instituting local inspection programs. All other state areas and municipalities, as well as state-owned buildings and public educational facilities, fall under the jurisdiction of the State Electrical Board for the purpose of electrical inspection

State Electrical Inspectors
There are fifteen State Electrical Inspection Districts in the State of Nebraska.

Each District consists of several counties serviced by one State Electrical Inspector. In each District, there may be several municipalities and/or counties which have State Electrical Board approved inspection programs.

State owned property, public educational facilities, and another political subdivision's property within those jurisdictions remain under the jurisdiction of the State Electrical Division.

Licensing requirements:

Electrical Contractor
Requirements:

Be a graduate of a four-year electrical course in an accredited college or university, or

Have at least one year experience acceptable to the board, as a licensed journeyman electrician, or

Have at least five years experience, acceptable to the board, in planning for, laying out, supervising and installing wiring apparatus, or equipment for electrical light, heat and power.

 
 
   
Fees:

Examination fee: $15

License fee: The fee for a license issued in an even numbered year is $125.00, and the fee for a license issued in an odd numbered year is $250.00.

     
CE Requirements: In order to renew any license, the holder must provide a certificate for proof of attendance of at least 12-hours of continuing education approved by the State Electrical Board, with at least six of those hours on the National Electrical Code. These hours are not required to renew an apprentice registration. These 12-hours are required to be copmleted by January 1 of each odd numbered year.
     
Renewal: On October 15 of even numbered years, and only as a courtesy extended by the Board, license renewal applications are sent by mail to the last known address of all license and registration holders.
 
Journeyman Electrician (JA)
Requirements:

Shall have at least four years experience, acceptable to the board, in the electrical trade

Registration as an apprentice electrician for those years shall, on the approval of the board, constitute evidence of such experience.

One year work experience credit will be given for completion of a two-year post-high school electrical course with a degree in electrical technology. One year work experience credit will be given for electrical experience gained in military service.

License fee: The fee for a license issued in an even numbered year is $25.00, and the fee for a license issued in an odd numbered year is $50.00.

Residential Journeyman Wireman (RW)
Requirements:

The board may by rule or regulation provide for the allowance of one year of experience credit for successful completion of a two-year post-high school electrical course approved by the board.

A residential journeyman electrician license shall be valid only for residential installations.

Requirements:

Apprentice Electrician
Requirements:

A person may register with the board and pay a fee as provided in section 81-2118 to work as an apprentice electrician. Such registration shall entitle the registrant to act as an apprentice electrician to a license holder.

An apprentice electrician shall do no electrical wiring except under the direct personal on-the-job supervision and control and in the immediate presence of a licensee under the State Electrical Act.

Such supervision shall include both on-the-job training and related classroom training as approved by the board. The licensee may employ or supervise apprentice electricians at a ratio not to exceed three apprentice electricians to one licensee, except that such ratio and the other requirements of this section shall not be applicable to a teacher-student relationship within a classroom of community college.

Direct personal on-the-job supervision and control and in the immediate presence of a licensee shall mean the licensee and the apprentice electrician shall be working at the same project location but shall not require that the licensee and apprentice electrician must be within sight of one another at all times.

An apprentice electrician shall not install, alter, or repair electrical equipment except as provided in this section, and the licensee employing or supervising an apprentice electrician shall not authorize or permit such actions by the apprentice electrician.

Reciprocates
The Nebraska State Electrical Board has a reciprocal licensing agreement for the Electrical Contractor license with Minnesota and South Dakota.

The Nebraska State Electrical Board has a reciprocal licensing agreement for the Journeyman Electrician license with all of the following states: Alaska, Colorado, Minnesota, New Hampshire, North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington, Arkansas, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Utah, and Wyoming. The applicant must have passed a State examination in order for the license to reciprocate to another State.

There are four Nebraska municipality examination programs. A State electrical license will be issued to applicants who have successfully passed one of these examinations and who holds a current license issued by the following municipalities: Fremont, Hastings, Lincoln, and Omaha.
