Electrical Codes
At the August 2008 meeting of the Minnesota Board of Electricity, the Board voted to have the effective date for the adoption of the 2008 National Electrical Code® without amendment to be September 15, 2008.

Licensing requirements:

Electrical Inspector
Requirements:

Minnesota Statutes, section 326.241, subdivision 2(2) requires all inspectors to be licensed as master or journeyman electricians. This requirement applies regardless of whether inspections are performed at the state or local level.


Class A Master Electrician
The term "Class A master electrician" means a person having the necessary qualifications, training, experience, and technical knowledge to install, alter, repair, plan, lay out, and supervising the installing, altering, and repairing of electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment for light, heat, power, and other purposes who is licensed as such by the board of electricity.
   
Requirements:

A graduate of a four-year electrical course in an accredited college or university, or

Shall have had at least one year of experience as a licensed journeyman, or

Shall have had at least five years experience in planning for, laying out, supervising, and installing wiring, apparatus, or equipment for electrical light, heat, and power.

Applicants must pass an examination.

CE Requirements: Within the renewal period, they are required to earn 16 hours of instruction. At least 12 hours must be on the NEC
     
Renewal: Biennial; Renewal fee: $80

Class A Journeyman Electrician
The term "Class A journeyman electrician" means a person having the necessary qualifications, training, experience, and technical knowledge to install, alter, repair, and supervise the installing, alterating and repairing of electrical wiring, apparatus and equipment for light, heat, power, and other purposes who is licensed as such by the board of electricity.
   
Requirements:

At least four years of experience installing and repairing electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment.

The board may by rule or regulation provide for the allowance of one year of experience credit for successful completion of an approved two-year post-high school electrical course.

Must pass an examination

Special electrician
The term "special electrician" means a person having the necessary qualifications, training, experience, and technical knowledge to install, alter, repair and supervise the installing, altering, or repairing of special classes of electrical wiring, apparatus, or equipment for light, heat, power, and other purposes or for special classes of electrical work who is licensed as such by the board of electricity.

Renewal: Biennial; Renewal fee: $30

Contractor
The term "contractor" means a person, partnership, or corporation operating a business that undertakes or offers to undertake to plan for, layout, or install or to make additions, alterations, or repairs in the installation of electrical wiring, apparatus, or equipment for light, heat, power, and other purposes with or without compensation who is licensed as such by the board of electricity. A contractor's license does not of itself qualify its holder to perform or supervise the electrical work authorized by holding any class of electrician's or other personal electrical license.
   
Requirements:

Must be a licensed master electrician or employ a licensed master electrician or employ a licensed class "A" or "B" master electrician

Each contractor shall give and maintain bond to the state in the penal sum of $5,000, and the sum shall be for the benefit of persons injured or suffering financial loss by reason of failure of such performance

Liability insurance with limits of at least $100,000 per occurrence, $300,000 aggregate limit for bodily injury, and property damage insurance with limits of at least $25,000 or a policy with a single limit for bodily injury and property damage of $300,000 per occurrence and $300,000 aggregate limits are required.

Each applicant must pass a written or oral examination given by the board to insure the competence of each applicant for license.

There are no experience requirements for contractor licenses.

Renewal: The electrical contractor licenses are good for two years, expiring the end of February each even-numbered year. The alarm and communication contractor license is good for two years, expiring June 30 each odd-numbered year. Biennial; Renewal fee: $200

Class B Master Electrician
The term "Class B master electrician" means a person having the necessary qualifications, training, experience, and technical knowledge to install, alter, repair, plan, lay out and supervise the installing, altering, and repairing of electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment for single phase systems of not over 200 ampere capacity for light, heat, power, and other purposes on any farm or in any single family dwelling located in any town or municipality which has a population of less than 2500 inhabitants who is licensed as such by the board of electricity.

CE Requirement: Within the renewal period, they are required to earn 16 hours of instruction. At least 12 hours must be on the NEC

Class B Journeyman Electrician
The term "Class B journeyman electrician" means a person having the necessary qualifications, training, experience, and technical knowledge to install, alter, repair, and supervise the installing, altering or repairing of electrical wiring apparatus, and equipment for single phase systems of not more than 200 ampere capacity for light, heat, power, and other purposes on any farm or in any single family dwelling located in any town or municipality which has a population of less than 2500 inhabitants who is licensed as such by the board of electricity.
   
Requirements:

As of August 1, 1985, no new "Class B" journeyman electrician's were issued

Individuals already holding Class "B" journeyman electrician licenses may retain the license and perform electrical work limited to single-phase systems not over 200 amps on farmsteads or single family dwellings in towns or municipalities with fewer than 2500 inhabitants.

Class A Installer
The term "Class A installer" means a person who has the necessary qualifications, training, experience, and technical knowledge to properly lay out and install electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment for major electrical home appliances and such other electrical equipment as is determined by the state board of electricity pursuant to section 236.242, subdivision 3, on the load side of the main service on farmsteads or in any town or municipality with less than 1,500 inhabitants, which is not contiguous to a city of the first class and does not contain an established business of a master electrician, and who is licensed as such by the state board of electricity.
   
Requirements:

Must have completed an approved post-high school course in electricity or have one year of experience

Post a $2000 bond

Pass an examination

Class B Installer
The term "Class B installer" means a person who has the necessary qualifications, training, experience, and technical knowledge to properly lay out and install electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment on center pivot irrigation booms on the load side of the main service on farmsteads, and install other electrical equipment determined by the state board of electricity.
   
Requirements:

Must have completed an approved post-high school course in electricity, or

One year of experience acceptable to the board

Post a $2000 bond

Pass an examination

Power Limited Technician

The term "power limited technician" means a person having the necessary qualifications, training, experience,a nd technical knowledge to install, alter, repair, plan, lay out, and supervise the installing, altering, and repairing of electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment for technology circuits or systems.

Except as otherwise noted, no personal shall install install, alter, repair, plan, lay out, or supervise the installing, altering or repairing of electrical wiring, apparatus, or equipment for technology circuits or systems unless the person is licensed by the board as a power limited technician.

   
Requirements:

Be a graduate of a four-year electrical course in an accredited college or university; or

Have had at least 36 months experience; the board may by rule provide for the allowance of up to 12 months (2,000) hours of experience credit for successful completion of a two-year post high school electrical electrical course or other technical training approved by the board

CE Requirements: Must attain eight hours of continuing education every renewal period

Maintenance electrician

"Maintenance electrician" means a person having the necessary qualifications, training, experience, and technical knowledge to properly maintain and repair electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment, who is licensed by the board of electricity.

A person licensed as a maintenance electrician may maintain and repair electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment while in the employ of an electrical contractor, or a full-time employee of a single employer while engaged in the maintenance and repair of electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment owned or leased by the employer and located within the limits of property owned or leased by the employer.

   
Requirements:

At least four years experience in maintaining and repairing electrical wiring and equipment

Must pass an exam

A maximum of one year of experience credit is allowed for the successful completion of an approved two-year post-high school technical course.

Unlicensed Person
An unlicensed person must work under the personal supervision of a licensed electrician

Reciprocates
The Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry has reciprocal agreements with Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota for both master and journeyman licenses. For journeyman licenses only, the department has reciprocal agreements with Alaska, Colorado, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. If an individual has received a journeyman electrician license by examination, with a score of at least 75 and held that license for at least one year, they may apply for a reciprocal license. Upon verification and payment of the application fee, a Minnesota journeyman license may be issued without examination
