Electrical Codes

2005 National Electrical Code, effective January 1, 2007

  • Adoption type: Hybrid. Code was adopted by the state for state-owned buildings and hospitals, but local jurisdictions can adopt and enforce different codes.

Licensing requirements:
Electrical Inspectors are not required to be licensed on the State level.

A new mandate was just put out that all Inspectors in the State are required to be ICC certified.

Participating Jurisdictions: Bossier City, Lafayette, Minden, Monroe, New Iberia, New Orleans, Ruston, Shreveport, and St. Bernard Parish.

Licensing requirements:
Journeyman Electrician: There is no state licensing of journeyman electricians

Electrical Contractor
Contractors performing $50,000 or more work on any single job must be licensed by State Licensing Board for Contractors. License must be renewed annually.
   
Requirements: Applicants are evaluated with respect to experience, financial responsibility, technical qualification through a written examination administered or approved by State Licensing Board for Contractors, and any other pertinent facts bearing upon applicant's responsibility as a contractor.
   
Fees:

License fee: $100 for first classification

$95 for each additional classification up to a maximum of $400, renewed annually

Exam fee: $100

You also have to pay the Board $40 for study material for the business and law part of the exam.

     
Renewal:

Renewal date: All licenses expire on December 31 each year.

 
Burglar Alarm
Requirements:

State contractor license required.

Also required is a Type "A" license issued by State Fire Marshal's office.

Each firm must employ at least one Class "B" technician who successfully completed the Level II Advanced Alarm Technician Training Course through NBFAA. All employees must have an individual license Type "B", "C", "D", or "E" issued by the State Fire Marshall.

Firms must have $500,000 liability insurance.

   
Fees:

License fee: $250

Individual licenses (required): $50

Exam fee: $100

You also have to pay the Board $40 for study material for the business and law part of the exam.

 
     
Renewal:

Renewal date: Licenses must be renewed annually. State licensed electrical contractors are exempt from being licensed by the State Fire Marshal as long as work is performed by the contractor.

 
Fire Alarm
Requirements:

State contractors licensed required.

State licensed electrical contractors can install and repair fire alarm systems.

Certifying and planning of systems must be performed by firms certified by State Fire Marshal. Firms must have at least one employee who is NICET Level II certified in fire protection or a professional engineer licensed in Louisiana.

All employees must have an individual license identified by class issued by State Fire Marshal.

Firms must have $500,000 liability insurance.

Licenses must be renewed annually.

License fee: $350

Individual licenses (required): $50

Additional Classes: $100

Reciprocates
The Board has reciprocity agreements with the Alabama Licensing Board for General Contractors, the Arkansas Contractors Licensing Board, the Mississippi Board of Contractors, the North Carolina Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors, the Tennessee Board for Licensing General Contractors, and the Utah Construction Trades Bureau Division of Occupational & Professional Licensing.  PLEASE NOTE: Your firm must be domiciled in one of these states and hold a license in the domiciliary state for a minimum of three years with no record of disciplinary action.
