Code Adoption State Fire Marshal Division
At a Glance: Licensing Requirements
Licensing: Electrical Inspectors/ServicesIowa General Assembly has enacted legislation (2007 Iowa Acts, House File 897) which establishes a statewide licensing program for electricians and electrical contractors. The program was established in the Fire Marshal Division of the Iowa Department of Public Safety, and will be overseen by a new Electrical Examining Board. The provisions of the law which require state licensing of electricians and electrical contractors take effect on January 1, 2008. Enforcement of these provisions will commence after the administrative rules have been adopted by the Board, the licensing program has been established, and electrical contractors and electricians have the opportunity to apply for and obtain their licenses. State Fire Marshal Division The Electrical Examining Board has created the following four endorsements for the Special Electrician License:
The Electrical Examining Board tentatively approve a schedule of fees for licenses to be issued by the Board. These fees will be adopted as part of the administrative rules on which the Board is currently working: Electrical Contractor
Master Electrician - Class A
Master Electrician - Class B
Journeyman Electrician - Class A
Journeyman Electrician - Class B
Special Electrician
Apprentice Electrician
Unclassified Person
NOTE: Fees will be required to be submitted with a completed application form. DO NOT submit the fee until the application form is available. Licensing: ContractorsThere is no state requirement for inspection of electrical installations; but the State Fire Marshal has general authority to inspect for fire hazards. The Iowa Bureau of Labor enforces NEC Chapter 5 for installations in hazardous locations. Division of Labor
