Electrical Codes
The State of Hawaii is closer to adoption of the first statewide set of construction codes following a Hawaii Building Codes Commission meeting on May 14, 2008. At that meeting, the members of the Commission updated the timelines for adoption of the various codes that will make up the 2008 Edition of the Hawaii Building Codes. Significantly, there is unanimous agreement on adoption of the 2008 National Electrical Code® as published.
The Commission has also selected the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) as the first statewide energy code. Significant in this proposal is a requirement to provide a readout of the electrical energy usage in each commercial tenant space. A study was cited that when a tenant knows how much electricity is being used, efforts will be made to reduce this usage. Full building commissioning of the systems affecting energy usage is also slated for inclusion, including a comprehensive report on the installation, adjustment, and function of the lighting and lighting control systems.
While the optimistic schedule for adoption by late summer 2008 will not be met, even adoption by the end of the year will not affect much of the construction in Hawaii, perhaps for a few years. Only State funded construction will be required to meet the new codes upon adoption: The Counties will have up to two years from that date to fully implement the State requirements for all other construction.
