Electrical Codes

2008 National Electrical Code, adopted without amendments, effective August 1, 2008

  • Adoption type: Hybrid. The state establishes the minimum standard. Local jurisdictions may make and enforce standards that are more stringent than the minimum established by the state and must furnish a copy thereof to the Board.

Licensing: Electrical Inspectors/Services & Licensing: Contractors
All contractors and electricians must be registered or licensed by the State Electrical Board. There is no local licensing. Local governments are permitted to require registration of electrical contractors performing services within their jurisdiction; fees cannot be charged for such registration.

State electrical inspectors must be master or journeyman electricians employed or appointed by the director of the Division of Registration. The Division director is also authorized to appoint or employ inspectors for one-, two-, three-, or four-family dwellings. These inspectors must have passed the written residential wireman's examination, been certified as residential electrical isnpector by a national certification authority approved by the Board, and have finished satisfactory evidence of at least two years practical experience in the inspection of residential dwellings.

Licensing requirements:

Electrical Contractor
Licenses may be issued either to firms or individuals. Any firm owned wholly or in part by a licensed master electrician, and any individual who is a licensed master electrician may obtain an electrical contractor's registration for a first time application fee of $150 and a subsequent $120 bi-annual renewal fee. Any other firm or individual desiring to be registered as an electrical contractor must employ a licensed master electrician in a supervisory capacity and pay a first time application fee of $150 and a subsequent $120 bi-annual renewal fee. The applicant must furnish evidence of compliance with the applicable workers' compenstation and unemployment compensation laws of the State. Out-of-State corporations must furnish a Certificate of Good Standing issued by the Colorado Secretary of State's office.
   
Requirements:

You must either be or employ a Colorado licensed master electrician who is a full time employee and is the responsible party for all electrical work done by the company. The master electrician must sign an Acknowledgment of Responsibility and can only be the responsible party for one company.

You must submit evidence that you comply with the Worker's Compensation and Unemployment Compensation laws (Office of Unemployment Insurance (303) 603-8231, Division of Worker's Compensation (303) 575-8700).

Out-of-State Corporations are required to obtain an Authority to Conduct Business in the State of Colorado from the Secretary of State's office (303) 894-2200. Limited Liability Partnerships should also contact the Secretary of State's office.

Biannually; Renewal fee: $120

Successful completion of an open book examination (based upon the current edition of the NEC) is required as a prerequisite for license or registration renewal.

 
Master Electrician  
Requirements: Applicants for a Colorado master electrician's license are required to provide verification of five years of electrical experience; four years of that time must be electrical construction wiring, for lights, heat, and power; with a minimum of two years of that time being commercial and/or industrial work. One additional year must be in planning, lay-out, supervising, and installing wiring, apparatus, and equipment for electrical light, heat, and power.

Renewal:

Biannually; Renewal fee: $48

Successful completion of an open book examination (based upon the current edition of the NEC) is required as a prerequisite for license or registration renewal.

 
Journeyman Electrician
Requirements: Applicants for a Colorado journeyman electrician's license are required to provide verification of four years of electrical construction wiring experience, for lights, heat, and power; with a minimum of two years of that time being commercial and/or industrial work. Therefore, your verification letters must state the percentage of your time spent performing commercial/industrial wiring, and the percentage of your time spent performing residential wiring.

Renewal:

Biannually; Renewal fee: $28

Successful completion of an open book examination (based upon the current edition of the NEC) is required as a prerequisite for license or registration renewal.

 
Residential Wireman
Requirements: Applicants for a Colorado residential wireman's license are required to provide verification of two years of electrical construction wiring experience, for lights, heat, and power; of one, two, three, and four family dwellings.

Exam fee: $72

   
Renewal:

Biannually; Renewal fee: $18

Successful completion of an open book examination (based upon the current edition of the NEC) is required as a prerequisite for license or registration renewal.

 
Apprentice  
Requirements: Apprentices must work under the supervision of a licensed electrician, generally defined as one licensed individual to three apprentices at a jobsite. Apprentices must be registered with the Board, and must re-register each time they change employers.
     
Fees: Registration fee: $10
 

All current electrical licenses will expire February 28, 2007. They are renewed for a two-year period.

CE Requirements
No CEUs requried, must take test instead. Legislation enacted in 1991 requires that a renewal examination be successfully completed at each license renewal period. Licensees must pass the exam with a 70%, in order for their license to be renewed.

Reciprocates
Alaska, Arkansas, Idaho, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wyoming

Colorado has reciprocal licensing agreements, for a journeyman license only, with the following states: Alaska, Arkansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.
