The State of Arkansas adopted the 2008 NEC and it will go into effect on June 1, 2008 with no amendments.
Licensing: Electrical Inspectors/Services
You'll need a state license to do electrical work in Arkansas. These classes of license are issued by the board: master electrician, journeyman electrician, industrial maintenance electrician, residential master electrical, residential journeyman electrician, and air-conditioning electrician.

Licensing requirements:
| Master electrician |
| Master electrician" shall mean an individual with an unlimited license classification and who is authorized to plan, lay out, and supervise the installation, maintenance, and extension of electrical conductors and equipment. |

| Restricted Lifetime Master Electrician's License |
The license shall be valid for the lifetime of the holder of such license, unless the license is suspended or revoked by the board for cause. |

"Industrial maintenance electrician" shall mean an individual who is limited by license classification to the repair, maintenance, alteration, and extension of electrical conductors and equipment for electrical power and control systems on or within industrial, manufacturing, or similar type facilities. For employees of industrial facilities, it is not necessary to possess this or any other class of license. |

A residential master electrician may perform electrical work on a commercial or other project under the direct supervision of a journeyman electrician or master electrician in the same manner and with the same ratio as an electrical apprentice. |

A residential journeyman may perform electrical work on a commercial or other project under the direct supervision of a journeymen electrician or master electrician in the same manner and with the same ratio as an electricial apprentice. |

| Temporary Licenses |
The board shall issue a temporary license as a master electrician or journeyman electrician for a period of six months, upon submission by the applicant of:
1) a temporary license fee in the amount of $50 for a master electrician and $25 for a journeyman electrician;
2) a completed application on a form provided by the board; and
3) evidence that the applicant holds a current license of the same classification issued by another state or has otherwise met the experience qualifications established in regulation 6.1 or 6.2. |

Grandfather appeals
Any applicant who applied for a license prior to July 1, 1998 may appeal to the full board: 1) any denial of license; 2) any approval of license for a class lower than the class of license sought by the applicant; or 3) any conditional approval of license, provided the board receives written notice for an appeal withi nthe longest of either 60 days from the effective date of these regulations or sixty days from the date of notice of the denial, conditional approval, or approval for a lower class of license.
CE Requirements
No journeyman electrician license or master electrician license shall be renewed unless the licensee completes at least eight (8) hours of continuing education for each National Electrical Code cycle.

Electrical contracting (master electrician license required for this classification): cable TV; electrical signs; electrical temperature control systems, electrical transmission lines, electrical work for buildings and structures; fire detection systems; communication lines and ducts; underground conduit installation; control systems and instrumentation; signal and burglar alarm; substations; and communication, computer and sound systems, cabling. |

The Board considers these as general contracting classifications of work. To qualify for any trade you need five years of experience in it. You also have to give the Board a list of equipment you have available to use in the trade. |

The Board requires you to have minimum business related net worth for any classification. For heavy, highway, railroad, airport, municipal & utility and building contracting it's $50,000, for light building, mechanical and electrical it's $20,000. The specialty trades are $5,000. The Board also requires contractors to post a bond for $10,000. |

Both commercial and residential classifications require that you pass an exam given by Thomson Prometric. |

| Residential Contractor's Classifications |

| Requirements: |
Residential builder: You need four years of experience and have two verifiable references to qualify. The license will authorize you to do both residential building and residential remodeling work. |

Residential remodeler: You will need proof of two years experience and two verifiable references to qualify. A contractor holding a commercial license from the Board with either the Building or Light Building classifications is considered to be qualified to perform residential building. However, a Residential Building class must be requested in writing prior to performing the work. |

Reciprocates
Arkansas has reciprocity with Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana. You must complete a Request for Verification of License and Affidavit form. The reciprocity is for exam waiver only.
