This individual functions as an Elevator & Amusement Device Inspector for the Division of Fire & Building Safety in the Department of Homeland Security. Incumbent serves as a division field representative making acceptance and annual inspections/tests to determine whether systems and components to the requirements of applicable elevator and amusement devise codes/ski lift regulations.
Responsibilities
Applies elevator, escalator, and escalator, and amusement devise codes to the various units installed or operating in the field;
• Inspects new installations for compliance with applicable rules and regulations;
• Advises local elevator manufacturers, amusement devise owners/operators, building and fire authorities, architects and engineers, regarding the application of promulgated codes;
• Causes cessation of operation of units for compliance with codes, laws, rules, regulations, and insures the proper filing of plans and specification for alterations and repairs before releasing elevator for normal use;
• Investigates and attempts to resolve field complaints;
• Serves as a witness in court on elevator and amusement devise code violations when litigation becomes necessary;
• Prepares and submits weekly reports to the applicable field supervisor
• Recommends elevator code revisions based on field experience;
• Trains and performs damage assessments during emergency response situations or works for EOC during same type of situations.
• Performs other related duties as assigned

Qualifications
Two years of full-time technical experience in the design, installation, maintenance or inspection of elevators, escalators/moving walks, powered personnel hoists, belted man lifts, dumbwaiters or amusement devices; or one and a half years of full-time experience as a Certified Electrical Inspector or Certified Mechanical Inspector. Electrical and/or Mechanical certification must be from the Building Officials and Code Administrators International (BOCA), the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) or the National Certification Program for Construction Code Inspectors (NCPCCI) Proof of certification must accompany application.
Substitutions-Accredited college training in any of the following areas may substitute for the required experience on a year for year basis: Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Construction Technology, or related areas.
A General Elevator certification issued by the National Certification Program for Construction Code Inspectors (NCPCCI) may substitute for one year of the required experience. Proof of certification must accompany application.
Certification through the National Association of Elevator Safety Authorities International (NAESA) as a Qualified Elevator Inspector may substitute for one year of the required experience. Proof of certification must accompany application
Certification through NAESA as a Qualified Elevator Inspector Supervisor may substitute for all of the required experience. Proof of certification must accompany application.
Certification through the National Association of Amusement Ride Safety Officials (NAARSO) as a Level One Amusement Ride Inspector may substitute for one year of the required experience. Proof of certification must accompany application.
Certification through NAARSO as a Level Two or Level Three Amusement Ride Inspector or an Instructor endorsement or an Inspector Supervisor endorsement may substitute for all of the required experience. Proof of certification must accompany application.
General Electrical or a General Mechanical certification issued by NCPCCI may substitute for six months of the required experience. Proof of certification must accompany application.
Certification through Building Officials and Code Administrators International (BOCA) as an Electrical Inspector or a Mechanical Inspector may substitute for six months of the required experience. Proof of certification must accompany application.
Certification through the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) as an Electrical Inspector or a Mechanical Inspector may substitute for six months of the required experience. Proof of certification must accompany application.
Certification through the Council of American Building Officials (CABO) as a One and Two Family Combination Inspector may substitute for one year of the required experience. Proof of certification must accompany application.
Certification through CABO as a Building Official may substitute for six months of the required experience. Proof of certification must accompany application.
An Individual One and Two Family Dwelling Code certification in all four modules (Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing and Structural) issued by NCPCCI may substitute for one year of the required experience. Proof of certification must accompany application.
Special Requirement: Certification through NAARSO as a Level One (or higher) Amusement Ride Inspector or a General Elevator certification issued by NCPCCI or certification through NAESA as a Qualified Elevator Inspector must be achieved before permanent status is granted.
