What are the types of certification programs you offer?

The mission of the Certified Electrical Inspector Programs (Residential and Master) is to promote professionalism within the electrical inspector field-of-practice through a widely accepted, respected and professionally sound certification program. Examination content is job related. The exam questions for the CEI program test the applicant’s ability to apply the Code rule to a graphic illustration or a photo in addition to finding the words in the NEC to answer the questions.  Upon successful completion of the written test, candidates are then asked to complete a practicum phase that is designed to ensure relevant job experience in the field. For more information, download an Applicant Handbook.

The purpose of the National Certification Program Construction Code Inspectors (NCPCCI) examinations is to provide a basis for assessing competency in technical code knowledge of a construction code inspector or plan reviewer. The International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI) recognizes these examinations, and certain states and organizations also recognize the results of these written examinations towards certification and licensing. To find more information about the NCPCCI exam, and download a candidate bulletin, please visit the Thomson Prometric Website.

By downloading the CEI Applicant Handbook and the Candidate Information Bulletin (NCPCCI), potential candidates can have most of their questions answered by reading the respective booklets. These books give information about cost, where and how to schedule testing, sample questions, and what each program requires.

What are the differences between the CEI program and the NCPCCI examination?

With the NCPCCI program, all that is required is the exam that test knowledge of the NEC. It does not require applicant to apply code in inspection situations.

The IAEI CEI program qualifications for certification are: experience, examination and your ability to apply code to installations and systems on a written exam and by actual field inspections, the Practicum phase, which includes verified field inspections..

The CEI program is for the more advanced electrical inspector.

By downloading the CEI Applicant Handbook and the Candidate Information Bulletin (NCPCCI), potential candidates can have most of their questions answered by reading the respective booklets.

I just passed my NCPCCI 2A, 2B, and/or 2C test. How can I receive a certificate stating so? How long does this take, and does it cost me anything?

IAEI does offer certificates and wallet cards for passing the NCPCCI 2A, 2B, and/or 2C examinations. After you pass the test(s), we download the results at the international office. At the beginning of the month (the month after testing), we will send out letters to all eligible candidates letting them know the certificates are available for $15 each. Along with the certificates, they will receive a wallet card showing the date of expiration.

To maintain the certification cards, you are required to obtain 24 contact hours (2.4 CEUs) over a three-year period year. Eight of those contact hours (.8 CEUs) have to be related to the changes to the code (Analysis of Changes).

Which certification do I qualify for if I hold a Master’s Electrician License?

If you hold a certification from a related electrical inspector certification program, you may transfer into the CEI program without examination. There is no transfer provision for holding a Master’s Electrician license exempting the exam. However, having a Master’s Electricians license does meet the eligibility requirements for either the CEI-Master or the CEI-Residential certification. There is no transfer provision in the NCPCCI program; an examination is required for each module.

What is the difference between recertification and renewal? The 2A, 2B and/or 2C certificates issued by NCPCCI will need to be renewed every three years by obtaining 24 contact hours (2.4 CEUs) in electrical related subjects plus a renewal fee.

The CEI-Master and/or CEI-Residential will need to be recertified every three years by obtaining 60 credit points and an annual program fee, which includes the recertification process. See the CEI Applicant Handbook for breakdown of points.

Do I have to have 24 contact hours (2.4 CEUs) for each certificate held under the NCPCCI program?

Only 24 contact hours (2.4 CEUs) are required for one or all certifications.
